The Pint continues

Following the Governments successful negotiations in Europe the British pint remains safe as one of our treasured measurements. The UK now has an indefinite exemption from EU laws which should have forced British businesses to produce separate metric an imperial labelling for different consumer markets. The Directive on Units of Measurement (Directive 2009/3/EC) as implemented by The Units of Measurement Regulations 2009 (SI 2009/3046) and the Weights and Measures (Metrication Amendment) Regulations 2009 (SI2009/3045) came into force on January 1st 2010.



The new legislation means that the UK is the sole decision maker for our pints of beer and mile as well as mile signs on the roads and troy ounces for precious metals. The cost of extra labelling was also of concern to business leaders who have commented on their satisfaction with the exemption.
